I wanted to share my mind on a DVD I picked up from ROH's website. The DVD was entitled "Straight Shooting Series with Terry Funk and Shane Douglas" this event took place on June 9th, 2005 at ROH studios. They touched on a variety of topics such as:
-ECW
-Working with each other
-The Night The Line Was Crossed
-WWE
-TNA
-WCW
-And more!
Straight up 2:30 hours of more knowledge and funny stories than anything you've ever heard.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hightlights:
They open up about the ECW weekend since One Night Stand and Hardcore Homecoming was just a few hours away. Their thoughts on the experience.
Funk:
-recollects about WCW and meeting Douglas and mentions Vince McMahon's domination on the business.
-ECW being a stage for guys who Vince nor WCW cared for and were seen as no good. When they were wrong.
-Bouncing from WCW to ECW and back.
-Funk's humbleness.
-Funk's beliefs.
-Backs up Shane's thoughts.
-Working with Lawler.
Shane:
-Backs up alot of Funk's rambling.
-Touches on tagging with Steamboat and his asperations.
-Praises Terry Funk, Bill Watts, and Eddie Gilbert.
-Wanting to be a heel and make it in the business.
-Original Hollywood Blonds idea, his stature compared to Steamboat, and various ideas. What turned him away from WCW in early 90's.
-Touched on UWF.
-Eddie Gilbert/ECW.
-Heyman's help on creating the Franchise.
-Original Concept for the character.
-Learning from Funk compared to learning from Steamboat.
-List of guys Funk put over.
-Shane's believes.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Also Mentions:
- Funk vs Flair
-What a heel should do for a babyface.
-Finding the right groove with an opponent to work the crowd.
-Legacy of ECW
-Paul Heyman's inconsistency as a boss.
-Wrestling's evolution and reliance on the past to project ROH and other major indy shows.
-MMA vs Wrestling
-When does a wrestler become their persona?
-State of wrestling.
-Personas being extensions of ones personality.
-Heritage in the business.
-Problems with guys today.
-Writers/Bookers.
-Where to promote a company.
-Thought on Rise/Fall of ECW sales.
-Reason for ECW surviving.
-Logic in the business.
-Booking Hardcore Homecoming.
-Funny story about Eddie/Paul.
-Bookers wrestling and their conflicts.
-Selfishness and obstacles.
-Manipulation vs Putting People Over.
-More on ECW.
-Word association.
-----------------------------------------------------
The highlights I've mentioned in this post are only a sample of what's actually said. I could not relate to you the attitude nor the diction in which this interview was shot in. I would recommend this tape to anyone who's sincere and wanting to know about the state of the business from where it came from to where it was/is. For this could be the tape that told the fans "I told you so" if any of the theories are true. Also if you're looking for a no bullsh*t in depth interview to complete your ECW/Hardcore Homecoming package. Order this tape while they still have it. It's only 5 dollars US plus shipping from rohwrestling.com, go to the link on our site and search their video catalog. I've seen other shoot interviews and documentaries placed on by low budget studios and major movie halls. This is honest from the horses mouths or assess depending on your view.
Rating this out of 5- I give it a very strong 4.85 because at the time it was all about hype for the ECW shows taking place that weekend. And it gets repetitive because of the lack of organization. If there were sections dedicated to ECW, dedicated to other various issues discussed it would be a better organized piece but I do see the originality in the open format and I respect that very much. But I cannot give this DVD a full 5.
I know what you're thinking, well this is a Shane Douglas site, you're supposed to be partial.. Well this is an ROH film in the ROH section of the forum and I'm being honest with it.
