So, here's the story. A disgruntled Bret Hart has finally had it up to the top of his head with WCW, and their BS politics, and finally manages to get out of his WCW contract before the end of the year 1998. It was also the constant convincing of his brother, Owen, who also played the role of peacemaker between Bret, Vince, & eventually Shawn Michaels in order for Bret to re-sign with the WWF, just in time for the first PPV of 1999 for the WWF. The Royal Rumble in Aneheim, CA.
Starrcade 1998:The Hart Beat ENDS for WCW!
The event was WCW Starrcade '98, and one of the matches that everyone was waiting to see was Ric Flair vs. Eric Bischoff for control of WCW. Throughout the whole match, Flair seemed to be in full control, and seemed to the match in the bag. That is, until returning nWo member, Curt Hennig interferred, and tried to help Bischoff win. But, in a move that shocked everyone watching, WCW United States Champion, Bret "The Hitman" Hart, who wasn't even on the PPV card, came out to the ring with his title belt, clocked Hennig with it, and then went into the ring and layed out Bischoff with it. He then pulled Flair on top of Bischoff, revived the ref, who counted to three, and awarded the presidency of WCW over to Ric Flair.
The Next Night on Nitro!
New WCW President, Ric Flair came out to the ring with his family, Four Horsemen, and the WCW U.S. Title. Gene Okerlund interviewed Flair about this situation.
Gene:Well, Mr. Flair, and I say that with the utmost respect. Please, go ahead and tell us what is going on with Bret Hart. We notice that you are holding the WCW United States Title. But, the champion, Bret Hart is nowhere to be found.
Flair:MEAN GENE! Wooooooooooo! The fact of the matter is this. Bret Hart did show us his true colors when he came to the aid of WCW, and helped me impeach Eric Bischoff at Starrcade. But, I got a call from The Hitman, earlier this morning from Bret Hart, and he has told me that as of now, he has QUIT WCW, and that was found to be more evident when arrived at my office in Atlanta, GA., that I found the WCW U.S. Championship on my desk. Hart told that the reason why he is leaving WCW is because he NEVER got a World Title shot, and that he has finally had enough, and has taken off, Gene.
With that said, Bret Hart was never seen or heard from again on WCW Television. Following Bret's official release from WCW, rumors on the Internet had been circulating about the possibility of Bret Hart going back to the WWF.
A Legend's Road Back Home!
The new year was rung in, as the road to the 1999 Royal Rumble began. The feud between Stone Cold Steve Austin and Vince McMahon was at a fever pitch, as Vince & Shane named Austin the #1 entrant into the Royal Rumble, while Vince was #30. But, that proved to be a mistake when WWF Commissioner, Shawn Michaels named Vince #2 in the Rumble. Also, Steve Austin helped Mankind defeat The Rock to win the WWF World Title. As the Royal Rumble 1999 PPV finally rolled around, the fact that McMahon would have to contend with Austin was one thing. But, little did Vince know, he would have to deal with a ghost from his past.
Royal Rumble 1999:No Chance in Hell!
On the pre-game show, several things happened where Mankind fought Mabel in a non-title match. Plus, Vince tried to goad Austin into a confrontation where he could get fired. But, HBK confronted McMahon, and told Vince that when this night is done, after the Rattlesnake strikes, Vince McMahon will be sufferring from a major HART ATTACK! The crowd cheered, as Vince looked totally confused over Shawn's words.

The Royal Rumble!
Steve Austin was #1, while Vince McMahon was #2. Austin pummeled McMahon for a couple of minutes, until McMahon led Austin through the crowd and into the lobby into the men's room, where The Corporation laid an ambush for Austin, and sent him to the hospital Vince returned for commentary for the rest of the Rumble. Owen Hart was one of the participants in the match. That was nothing new. Owen waited for his partner, Jeff Jarrett to make his entrance after the count down. But, there was no Jeff. The cameras went backstage to see Jarrett laying face down on the floor with Debra & WWF Officials checking on him. Commissioner, Shawn Michaels arrived on the scene to see what happened. He checks on Jarrett, and sees Jeff's attacker.
HBK:Aw man, see what you did? You just attacked my #25. Ok, now you're #25. Go on and get out there, now! NOW!
The cameras cut back out to ringside where Vince and the announcers are wondering what happened. Suddenly, the fireworks start busting out, and the familiar music of The Hitman hits the speakers. Vince is so shocked that he gets out of his seat. Finally, cameras show Bret Hart emerging from the locker room area. The crowd in the Anahiem Pond went totally apesh*t as The Hitman makes his way to the ring with vengeance in his eyes. When he gets to ringside, he makes a b-line for Vince, grabs him by his sweatshirt, nails him for good measure, and throws him back into the ring where he starts pounding away on McMahon. Suddenly, Bret's brother, Owen pulls Bret off of him. Owen tells Bret to hold on for just a second, as he turns around and kicks Vince over on his back like a football, and then invites Bret in on a two on one beatdown of Vince McMahon. The crowd goes even more crazy as it seems like the return of The Hart Foundation isn't too far behind. As time passed, Stone Cold returned to try and win the Rumble. Several other men were eliminated, as well as The Corporation and Owen Hart. Bret & Austin then double teamed Vince to eliminate him, and then, Bret shocked the world by eliminating himself, giving the victory to Stone Cold Steve Austin. But, the question was, why? Why did The Hitman give the win to one of his old enemies in the WWF?
